Originating from the University of Amsterdam (PhD in freshwater ecology 1976), before accepting a 15 yr position at CSIRO Fisheries & Oceanography (Principal Research Scientist), and ultimately moving to a 28 yr career at University of Tasmania (Head School of Plant Science, now Emiritus Professor IMAS). Recognised nationally and internationally for marine biosecurity work on harmful algal blooms impacting on human health, the fish farm and shellfish industries, their stimulation by coastal eutrophication and global spreading via ship’s ballast water
