The Australian southern bluefin tuna industry has achieved a world-first Marine Stewardship Council (MSC) sustainability certification for its purse seine fishery, marking a major milestone for a species that was once severely overfished. The certification reflects years of collaborative effort between industry, scientists, and regulators to rebuild tuna stocks, remove the species from Australia’s threatened list, and adopt sustainable fishing practices. The recognition is expected to open up new export opportunities in eco-conscious markets across Europe, Asia, and the Americas.
