The comeback of Queensland’s Native Oyster – FRDC

Queensland’s oyster sector is getting a fresh start with a new aquaculture project trialling two native tropical species: the Blacklip Rock Oyster and the Queensland Sunshine Oyster. Unlike the traditional Sydney Rock Oyster, which has been devastated by QX disease and climate stress, these tropical oysters show strong resistance, thrive in warmer waters, and reach market size a year faster.

A hatchery breakthrough has solved long-standing production bottlenecks, and early farm trials are showing excellent survival and growth. With consumer taste tests now on the horizon, these oysters could open a new frontier for sustainable aquaculture along Queensland’s coastline.
