Professor Gretta Pecl

Director, Centre for Marine Socioecology UTAS and Professor of Ecology and Climate Change, IMAS

Gretta is a Professor of marine ecology at the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies, and Director of the Centre for Marine Socioecology at UTAS. She has expertise and a strong interest in exploring the impact of climate change on our oceans, and working in collaborative ways with industry, government and others to develop adaptation options for conservation, fisheries and aquaculture. She developed and leads the national citizen science initiative Redmap Australia (www.redmap.org.au), was a Lead Author for the most recent Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) AR6 report, and is ranked in the top 200 most influential climate scientists in the world (and the top 20 women). Gretta has a strong passion for science communication and engagement and loves throwing a line in for calamari with her two teenagers.

Fun-fact

I grew up with a bunch of land-lovers and originally became interested in marine systems because my mother used to shriek with terror if we went into the ocean deeper than our knees….it made me curious about what was so scary in there (spoiler: nothing that warranted mums reaction :)
