FishSOOP (Fishing Vessels as Ships of Opportunity Program) uses commercial fishing vessels to collect ocean temperature and depth observations as part of their normal fishing activities. Small sensors attached to fishing gear provide observations from beneath the ocean surface, helping fill gaps in Australia’s ocean observing network and improve our understanding of changing ocean conditions, including marine heatwaves.

The FishSOOP data are quality controlled and made publicly available through the Australian Ocean Data Network (AODN). The OceanCurrent interface allows users to explore daily and regional observations, including temperature, depth and temperature anomalies from locations around Australia.
