Researchers at James Cook University (JCU), through their Tropical Aquafeed Innovations Lab (TAIL), are leading a major project to support the growth of the grouper aquaculture industry in Australia and Vietnam. Supported by the Australian Centre for International Agricultural Research (ACIAR), the project addresses the lack of species-specific formulated feeds—a key barrier holding back the potential of this high-value seafood species.

Traditionally, Vietnamese farmers have relied on wild-caught low-value fish to feed grouper, which contributes to pollution and poor fish health. Meanwhile, Australian producers have used generic feeds not tailored for grouper, resulting in suboptimal growth. The JCU team, led by Associate Professor Dr Leo Nankervis and Post-doctoral Research Fellow Dr Simon Das, is tackling this issue by developing nutrient-optimized diets based on in-depth research into growth, health, and production requirements.

The project takes a holistic supply chain approach, focusing on feed ingredients, production, and on-farm performance. Initial trials are already producing promising results, with diets being monitored for effects on grouper behaviour and physiology. These new feeds are expected to benefit small-scale farmers first, with potential for broader commercial uptake.

By improving feed quality and sustainability, the initiative supports economic development, reduces environmental impacts, and aligns with ACIAR’s mission to deliver community benefits and create opportunities for smallholders to scale into successful small-to-medium enterprises (SMEs).
