Enabling real-time data collection in fisheries

QUESTION

How can fisheries collect data while fishing to support real-time assessments?

ANSWER 1

Written response:

There are a few ways that fisheries can collect data while fishing. The Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies is working on getting electronic measuring boards out there, where fishers can quickly measure a selection of their catch, with the information getting automatically sent back to IMAS researchers. For other fisheries such as abalone and sea urchin in Tasmania, the divers have GPS and depth logging devices that also send data back to scientists to help improve assessments and answer questions on a finer spatial scale.
