The Northern Australia Marine Climate Briefing, conducted on behalf of CSIRO and the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation (FRDC), complements the national climate briefings with a dedicated focus on climate drivers and emerging changes affecting northern tropical marine ecosystems and the communities that depend on them.
The session was presented by CSIRO researchers Dr Steph Brodie, Dr Laura Blamey and Dr Éva Plagányi, alongside Dr Arani Chandrapavan, Senior Research Scientist in ocean climate change at WA DPIRD. Collectively, the presenters bring extensive expertise in understanding climate impacts on marine ecosystems and northern fisheries, including the Northern Prawn Fishery and Torres Strait Island fisheries. They have previously delivered northern-focused briefings in December 2023 and April 2024.
The briefing shared updated climate information and highlighted practical examples of how fisheries and fishing communities are beginning to respond and adapt to emerging challenges. While the primary focus was the seafood sector, the insights are relevant to anyone involved in marine environmental management.
