During Australian Food Safety Week, IMAS researcher Dr Alison Turnbull is promoting safe seafood practices with the message: “Keep it nice, put it on ice.” Through the SafeFish project, IMAS highlights the health benefits of seafood and the low incidence of illness in Australia, while raising awareness about potential risks, particularly for vulnerable groups. Dr Turnbull urges consumers to refrigerate seafood promptly, avoid undercooking, and read labels carefully—especially during warmer months and festive seasons when food safety risks increase. She warns that pathogens like Listeria can pose serious risks to immunocompromised individuals, pregnant women, and the elderly. The SafeFish initiative, in collaboration with the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation and the South Australian Research and Development Institute, provides key advice to ensure seafood remains a healthy and safe dietary choice.
