The Albanese Government has announced that Australians will soon have access to long-range marine heatwave forecasts, with public release planned for the 2025/26 summer via the Bureau of Meteorology. Developed in partnership with CSIRO and supported by the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation, the forecasts will predict the likelihood and location of marine heatwaves up to three months in advance.

These tools aim to help governments, researchers, and marine industries—including fisheries and aquaculture—prepare for the growing impacts of ocean warming. Ministers Murray Watt, Julie Collins, and Tim Ayres highlighted the importance of this initiative in building climate resilience, protecting marine ecosystems, and supporting sustainable ocean-based industries.
