Martin has been in the seafood sector for over 40 years and is the Managing Director of SeaBOS (Seafood Business for Ocean Stewardship) which is a collaborative venture between eight of the world’s largest seafood businesses, and the Stockholm Resilience Centre in Sweden.

He started his seafood career in academia, studying fisheries biology and fishing gear technology; and spent three years working as a deckhand on longline and trawl vessels in New Zealand and Australia. Martin moved to work for 13 years in the Australian government in fisheries resources management, including as General Manager of Fisheries for the Australian Fisheries Management Authority.

For twenty-six years after leaving government, Martin worked with an Australian wild-catch seafood company, Austral Fisheries, who operate boats in the sub-Antarctic fishing for toothfish and icefish; trawlers in the northern prawn fishery across the top of Australia fishing for banana and tiger prawns; and trap and trawl boats in the northern Australia finfish fishery for snappers.

Martin was the inaugural Chair for 13 years of the Coalition of Legal Toothfish Operators (COLTO), working to eliminate IUU fishing from toothfish fisheries, and eliminate seabird bycatch.

Martin holds a BSc from Victoria University of Wellington (NZ), a Graduate Diploma in Fisheries Technology from the Australian Maritime College, and is a passionate recreational angler.
