Fred is a specialist in the field of marine ecology. With over twenty-five years’ experience, he commenced by specialising in spatial analysis and habitat modelling utilising tracking data collected from diverse marine top predators. Fred completed his PhD through the University of La Rochelle (France). In which he examined the foraging behaviour of elephant seals in relation to the oceanographic conditions in the Southern Ocean. He has undertaken multiple fieldwork assignments in the French sub-Antarctic islands and has also worked at the Maurice Lamontagne Institute for the Department of Fisheries and Oceans in Quebec, Canada, where he researched Arctic marine mammals. Currently employed at SARDI, Fred has been involved in many diverse projects in multiple disciplines of marine and fisheries sciences such as climate, oceanography, benthic ecology, population dynamics (stock assessment), fish biology, marine mammals, and seabirds’ ecology. He utilises high level skills and expertise in developing and applying complex methods and technologies for data analyses, including Artificial Intelligence, interactive platforms, R packages and fisheries modelling. Fred is particularly interested in addressing the risks and impacts of climate change on the South Australian seafood industry.
