Climate change will increase labour risks in fisheries, study warns

An article by Responsible Seafood Advocate investigates how climate change is set to make fishing even more dangerous.

A new study led by WorldFish warns that worsening storms, extreme heat, and shifting fish stocks will increase physical hazards and strain on fishers’ mental health. Combined with long-standing structural issues such as forced labour risks, weak enforcement, and limited worker protections, these changes could deepen inequities across the global fishing industry.

The authors call for integrated policies across climate, fisheries, labour, and migration systems, as well as stronger communication between fishers and policymakers to build safer, fairer, and more resilient fisheries.
