Building climate-resilience this coming World Oceans Day
- News item

Western Australia’s Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD) is actively contributing to the national Sea Change Australia project, funded by the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation. This initiative unites recreational and commercial fishers, industry leaders, scientists, and managers to co-develop climate-resilient strategies for Australia’s seafood sector. DPIRD scientists Dr Gary Jackson and Dr Arani Chandrapavan are collaborating with national research institutions including the University of Tasmania, IMAS, CSIRO, and CMS to explore the most effective ways to communicate climate information to those in the seafood industry. Their work focuses on identifying the right content, format, and knowledge gaps in current climate understanding. The project aims to empower the fishing community to adapt to climate variability by sharing success stories and solutions. Tied to the theme of World Oceans Day—”sustaining what sustains us”—Sea Change Australia is a collaborative effort to future-proof Australia’s fisheries through science, communication, and community input.
