From 1 July 2026, country-of-origin labelling (CoOL) will be required on menus in Australian restaurants, cafes, pubs, and takeaways, allowing consumers to choose between Australian, imported, or mixed-origin seafood. Announced by Ministers Ed Husic and Julie Collins, the new labelling aims to support local seafood industries, improve transparency for consumers, and boost the economy, with a 12-month transition period and final public consultation underway.

Once in place, venues such as restaurants, takeaways, pubs and clubs will be required use the Australian-Imported-Mixed (AIM) model to indicate the seafood’s origin from three options:

  • A (Australian)
  • I (imported)
  • M (of mixed origin containing both Australian and imported seafood)
