ABC: Algal bloom recreational fishing response includes plans for artificial reef and reservoirs

In response to the devastating toxic algal bloom affecting South Australia’s coastline, the state government has announced a range of support measures for the recreational fishing sector. These include building a new artificial reef in Gulf St Vincent, expanding freshwater fishing in reservoirs (pending health approvals), and allocating $200,000 to RecFish SA for community fishing programs. The bloom has severely impacted fisheries and tourism, prompting calls for further economic support. RecFish SA and Opposition Leader Vincent Tarzia support initiatives like fish stocking, reservoir fishing, and tourism vouchers to relieve pressure on marine ecosystems and help regional economies recover.
