A Europe-wide initiative, Climarest, is restoring coastal habitats from the Arctic to the Mediterranean, tackling the twin threats of climate change and human impact. The project focuses on seagrass meadows in Ireland and Spain, oyster reefs in France, kelp forests in Portugal, and Arctic fjords in Svalbard.

Researchers are combining nature-based solutions with community engagement, creating artificial oyster reefs, planting seagrass, building coastal protection structures, and raising public awareness about ecosystem health. Early results include improved oyster settlement, stabilised coastlines, and reduced pollution in Svalbard.

Project leaders highlight that restoration benefits both nature and people, providing cleaner water, coastal protection, carbon storage, and sustainable livelihoods. By linking scientific research with local knowledge, Climarest offers a scalable model for resilient coastal management across Europe.
