World’s First Underwater Podcast to Showcase WA Seagrass
- News item

Schools, students, and the public are invited to a world-first live underwater podcast from a seagrass meadow off Western Australia to mark World Seagrass Day. The one-hour broadcast on 27 February (10–11 am AWST) is supported by the Western Australian Marine Science Institution (WAMSI) and will be streamed online via YouTube and Facebook.
Murdoch University marine scientists Associate Professor Mike Van Keulen and science communicator Kurt Krispyn will speak directly from the seafloor using full-face communication masks, with a 4K underwater camera capturing the session. Topics include the ecological importance of seagrass, climate impacts, coastal processes, conservation, and marine science careers.
A special viewing event for schools will be held at the Indian Ocean Marine Research Centre at UWA, giving students a unique chance to see field science in action. The event aims to inspire audiences, promote understanding of WA’s marine ecosystems, and highlight the role of seagrass in supporting biodiversity and protecting coastlines.
