A new artificial reef off Dampier, Western Australia, promises to enhance marine biodiversity and support local recreational fishing. Installed by Fugro on behalf of Woodside Energy and Recfishwest, the reef spans 16,000 m² and consists of 48 concrete modules designed to mimic natural reef structures.

Over time, the reef will provide shelter for fish, encourage coral and invertebrate growth, and foster a thriving marine ecosystem. Barry Walsh from Fugro said, “Our collaboration with Woodside and Recfishwest shows what can be achieved when industry and community work together for positive environmental outcomes.”

The project reflects a growing trend of using industrial expertise to deliver ecological and social benefits. Environmental monitoring will continue to track the reef’s development, ensuring it contributes to coastal ecosystem health, sustainable recreation, and community wellbeing in the Dampier region.
